The Hampshire Wildlife Trust is our local county wildlife trust and is based, a beechcroft.jpg (158620 bytes) in Curdridge.  It is one of the numerous autonomous trusts that link up nationally in the Wildlife Trust Partnership.

The Hampshire Trust has 58 Nature Reserves covering 2,500 hectares and a wide range of habitats.  Around 50% of the land owned by the Trust is designated under international conservation designations. Access to most of them is free and unrestricted but a few have to be controlled for a range of different reasons.  Information on local free access reserves will be added to this web in due course.

I

The Trust has around 20,000 members and is growing fast..  It is membership numbers which enable the Trust to speak with conviction to Government and land owners so if you are not a member please join us. Membership costs £24 for individuals. E mail for a leaflet and application form which has details of concessions that are available.

When you have joined you will receive 3 combined Hampshire 'Wildlife' and  National 'Natural World' magazines a year, an events diary, and much more.

   Hampshire Ornithological Society (HOS)

HOS is the county bird organisation whose main activity is recording information on bird populations, movements etc.  It publishes an excellent quarterly news letter, an even more significant annual bird report and a few years ago the book 'Hampshire Birds'.  No local birder should be without these books.

I have also found HOS walks to be led by people who are very helpful and knowledgeable.  They are of course spread all over the county but a number are in or within easy reach of the Solent area.

Membership is cheap - a mere £9.  Send a cheque to the Membership Secretary, 36, Penhale Gardens, Fareham PO14 4 NL.

HOS web is at www.hos.org.uk

Portsdown

There are two linked organisations dealing with Portsdown Hill.

The main one is the City Council funded PORTSDOWN COUNTRYSIDE SERVICE (logo right).
Linked to the Countryside Service there are the Portsdown Hill Conservation Volunteers.

The Friends of Portsdown Hill brings together the conservationists and those interested
in the history of the hill.

You will find more information on the Events and Portsdown pages.

The Friends of Langstone Harbour is a group that is active in all areas of interest in the harbour to promote its well being and to conserve it as a great local amenity for the people of Havant and Portsmouth.  Its main regular activity is monthly 'workouts' usually on the last Saturday of each month.  Details are shown on the events page.  There is also a page about the Harbour .

Brent Lodge Animal Hospital

Brent Lodge treats around 3,000 wild birds and animals every year.

Every patient coming in is assessed by an expert carer and treated for whatever may be wrong in a fully equipped modem surgery and then placed in the quiet of a hospital cage with food and water to recover. Whilst they are watched throughout the day there are regular daily assessments of the patients progress, involving monitoring its feeding, weight gain or loss, appearance and the healing of wounds etc. Following this, further treatment may have to be given on a daily basis until they are ready for release.

While most of our patients are birds, Brent Lodge treats around 500 mammals every year. The majority of these are Hedgehogs.  Currently they are very busy looking after hedgehogs that have failed to hibernate - mainly young ones that have not gained weight enough to hibernate and survive.  To help them cope they appealed for people to take on the care of hedgehogs at home in areas where eventual release was likely to be satisfactory - we have had one and hope to next winter as well.

For more information see the web site.  Phone on 01243 641672 for advice on sick birds or animals.

Havant Hayling & Emsworth Wildlife Trust District Group

This group is very active in arranging meetings, walks and other promotional and fund raising events.  In the winter we meet once a month at The Warblington School Denvilles, Havant and also arrange at least one walk a month.  Through the summer we walk every Wednesday evening and also arrange other events.  Details are in the events list.

We have a committee which meets regularly to consider our programme, local conservation and planning issues.  We need new ideas to promote wild life conservation and to raise funds.  If you have such an idea contact us.

Our Chairman is John Goodspeed and our secretary Lindsay Silvester
